Every year since 1977, International Museum Day is held worldwide sometime around 18 May. From America and Oceania to Europe, Asia and Africa, International Museum Day aims to increase public awareness of the role of museums in developing society. The theme for International Museum Day 2011 is Museum and Memory. International Museum Day is sponsored by the International Council of Museums, established in 1946, which sets standards of excellence for museums world wide.
